Two years ago, I received an offer for a management level role that I was pretty excited about, but I wanted to negotiate my benefits and salary just a bit. Sounds pretty normal, right? The day I went in to discuss this with my then-boss, he asked me: “So, did your dad or your boyfriend tell you to negotiate your salary?” I’m sad to say that I didn’t stand up for myself, and I endured three months of constant sexist comments and treatment until I had had enough and left.

That experience changed me. It took me awhile to see it, but I realized that the double standards are VERY REAL. If I had been a man, do you think my boss would have asked me if my mom or girlfriend told me to negotiate? Probably not. Since then, this fire has been growing inside me. A fire burning to elevate and empower women to be strong, confident and self-assured. Female is not a weakness. Femininity is not a burden. It’s beautiful. And powerful. It’s an advantage.
